Greg’s Country Journal: The Sad Case of Mrs. Robin

July 25, 2009 1:29 am

One of the cool things about living in the country, in the middle of nowhere is you get to have grand adventures with the local fauna and you can imagine that they can talk and that they wear clothes and have motorcars, and that you’re a British kid who gets to know them and their peculiarities.

So, one of my madcap animal friends was (is?) Mrs. Robin. She lived under the deck in my parents’ backyard. She was a lovely sort, she was. Whenever one of us would be by the place she’d come out and chirp loudly, she’d made her nest under the deck and we were upsetting her. My mom tells me that’s she’s never seen chicks in the nest – even in past years. Poor thing.

So she’d always do that, but today when I was out mowing the lawn, nothing. She was nowhere to be seen. I took a peek at here nest, and there was no sign of her.

I hope you’re okay, Mrs. Robin. I’m thinking of you.

Greg watches a movie, Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince

I liked this movie. The romance was played up too much in my mind, it didn’t really work for me, but the movie overall was pretty good. Ron looks like a brooding steroid head in it.

Good flick.

Time And Relatives’ Development In Space

July 5, 2009 7:50 pm

I had an eventful week, Tuesday I had a big dentist appointment in Toronto with my now-celebrity (at least for me, the guy knows Wayne Gretzky!) dental practitioner. So Tuesday he removed a filling and then drilled out a hollow in my 3-6 tooth (dental lingo, yo). He gave me a prescription for some pain killers and anti-biotics and told me to go see a root canal specialist. So what was that.

Then I went over to the Lundy’s and hung out with them for a while. We caught about about various goings-on (going-ons? Whatever – you catch my drift) before heading downtown to Wilson and Kate’s (was it proper to only add the possessive stuff to her name, or should I have added it to both, making it ‘Wilson’s and Kate’s’? I figure they come in a package so the two names together make one noun or something). So I hung out there, was blessed enough to attend a Bible study with some old (but not too old! We’re all the right age) friends and then I think we watched Ratatouille.

Wednesday we went to Niagara Falls with Danny and Nelson and Nelson gave me a lesson on how to drive manual! Thanks Nelson! Nelson drove the whole way there and back too, so thanks again Nelson! It was a ton of fun. Since I only have dialup I can’t share too many pictures, but at some point I’ll embed a nice picture into this post (maybe). The fireworks display at Niagara Falls seemed kinda lame, but we watched it by driving past it anyway, I took a video. So we didn’t get the whole effect.

I said something entirely embecilic on the way back, but I blame the high dosage pain killers and antibiotics I’m on.

That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

Thursday was cool too, even though it involved me being in Long and McQuade and Saved By Technology as we were pricing keyboards for Kate. Two places that are extremely dangerous for me to be in. Thankfully for me Monster Days were over (too bad for Kate) so the ridiculous bargains were at a minimum. I didn’t even get too tempted at either store to buy a VST or some hardware that I can’t afford.

Thursday night we watched Doubt, which seemed like it’d be an awesome movie except for the fact that we were watching the ‘Momento’ version, which was all out of sequence. We figured out the problem (but not what the cause was) and restarted it but I had to leave before we could finish it. It did seem like it’d be really good though.

So, at this point I’d like to address the subject of this here post, ‘Time And Relatives’ Development In Space’. It’s of course a reference to Doctor Who, but the less said about him and the devloution of the character the better. I’m referring to a weird Doppler Effect type thing that’s going on with me and my sister and nieces. They live a few hours away, and I see them less frequently than I’d like, but more than I used to because Belleville’s a lot closer than Toronto was, and they tend to come here or we tend to go there much more than when I was in Toronto. Anyway, I saw my nieces just a few weeks ago, really, and I saw them again this weekend and they seem genuinely changed from before. I know part of it was that they were at home (rather than at my parents’ place and without their parents) but they really seem to be maturing at a rate that seems more rapid than it is because our visits are so far apart. It’s not the time between visits that seems pronounced, but it’s the changes in them over the span of time that do.

Weird, but they’re still ridiculously fun loving, and have great voices so they’re not quite more mature than I am – yet :D

But they will be soon.

Random People Sightings

May 25, 2009 5:31 pm

I’ve been back to Toronto three times since I moved out to Belleville, each time for less than a day.

First time was with my parents because they had a bunch of appointments and I really wanted to go back to get some stuff.

Second time was this past Sat. for Irene’s wedding (which was awesome, btw!) Ran into an old high school friend at the Sheppard Centre. She knew I’d moved out to Belleville so she thought it was really weird to see me. It was of course, because I was only there for about 15 minutes to buy a paper while waiting to meet Kate and Wilson (get a blog, dude).

Second Random People Spotting was today, I decided to go into Toronto with my parents (more appointments for them) and when I got onto the subway at Sheppard Ave. there was another friend of mine on the car, right at the door where I was getting in. Weird eh? I see my friends so often when I don’t make plans to see them that I wonder why I have a phone.

Greg watches a movie: Star Trek

May 19, 2009 8:10 pm

Sucked.

For one thing, Star Trek villains always stink. This guy’s motivation was stupid. Leonard Nimoy was in it, can’t figure out why.

Simon Pegg was awesome, but the rest of the movie sucked liked everything else Star Trek.

Ooooh, I can’t wait for the G.I. Joe movie to come out later this summer, that’s just going to be awesome, I bet.

Fun with the truth, AOL edition

8:05 pm

From the Motley Fool in 1999 (emphasis mine):

But not all deferred revenues are created equal. I recently came across a company for which I viewed deferred revenue as not being very meaningful. The company was X-ray device maker Hologic (Nasdaq: HOLX). In the Revenue Recognition section of the company’s financial statement footnotes, it said the following: “The Company has reserved for potential losses under these contracts by deferring revenue of an amount equal to 10% of the contracts funded.” While on the surface this seems to be conservative accounting, it’s certainly not deferred revenue that you can count on to make its way to the income statement in the future like you can with Microsoft or AOL.

From a Smart Money article in 2000 (just after the beginning of the .com shakeout) about AOL:

“The trend in backlog and deferred revenue reflects a shift to more established advertisers and is not a reflection of slowing ad/commerce momentum,” Kiggen said.

From a CNET News article in 2000:

These AOL sourpusses said the company’s ad/commerce backlog, which was flat at $3 billion, and deferred revenue, which fell, proved AOL was hurt by the dot-com implosion.

But that bearish case doesn’t hold up. For a reality check, I called William Blair analyst Abhishek Gami, who calls it straight and isn’t tangled up with the sheep crowd. Gami was surprised by the negativity from some analysts, who were obviously playing along with the market sentiment. “I’d almost call AOL a value play,” said Gami, who rates AOL a “strong buy.”

“I’d almost call AOL a value play,” said Gami, who rates AOL a “strong buy.”

Greg watches a movie: Watchmen

March 10, 2009 9:18 pm

Greg’s Rating: 0/5

This movie stunk. I thought it was going to be bad but it was even worse than I thought. I read the comic and thought it was pretty bad but the movie made it worse. The characters were okay, and the first few minutes of the movie were pretty promising but the story went straight to the moon (in a bad way) 1/3 of the way through.

The very beginning was pretty cool though (like, during the credits sequence, downhill steadily after that).

Oh well, on the plus side, movies in Belleville are only $4.20 on Tuesdays, so I think I’ll be watching more!

Goodbyes (and exercise)

March 6, 2009 9:27 pm

Erin (on hiatus, come back soon!) mentioned that she had Triumph’s ‘Lay it on the Line’ on her MP3 player.

Now, Rik’s the single biggest reason (other than my mom’s constant prodding for me to get a hobby) for playing the guitar (and the reason I play an RGX). He’s also a frightfully awesome singer.

So, last night being in a Triumph-ant mood I exercised (I do that once in a while) and put on some of Stages. I sang along. In the basement. Loud enough that my mom heard. At 3am.

So, to make amends somehow, here’s some Rik:

Just a reminder of what’s important

The Unprecedented Economic Crisis is worry a lot, so I decided to hijack a famous song and put to words what everyone’s thinking.

I give you ‘What the World Needs Now (is Wealth, Sweet Wealth)

What the world needs now is wealth sweet wealth,
its the only thing that there’s just too little of.
what the world needs now is wealth sweet wealth
no not just for some but for everyone.

Lord we dont need another mountain,
there are mountains and hillsides enough to climb,
there are oceans and rivers enough to cross
enough to last until the end of time

what the world needs now is wealth sweet wealth
its the only thing that theres just too little of,
what the world needs now is wealth sweet wealth
no not just for some but for everyone

Lord, we dont need another meadow,
there are corn fields and wheat fields enough to grow,
there are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine,
oh listen Lord, if you want to know

What the world needs now is wealth sweet wealth
its the only thing that theres just too little of.
what the world needs now is wealth sweet wealth
no not just for some, oh but just for every every everyone.

what the world (whoa whoa) needs now,
is wealth (is wealth) sweet wealth
what the world ( oh oh) needs now
is wealth (is wealth) sweet wealth
what the world (whoa whoa) needs now
is wealth (is wealth) sweet wealth
