I liked this one, but I dunno – the 70’s aesthetic isn’t my cup of tea.

I don’t get the high acclaim this movie got. It was okay but I didn’t think it was anything special. The direction and production were awesome. The director was Danny Boyle (Sunshine, 28 Days Later, Shallow Grave) – who based on those three previous movies is one of my favourite directors.
The story itself wasn’t terribly interesting, kind of a ‘paint-by-numbers’ ‘up-from-the-ghetto’ type thing. Not terrible, but I wouldn’t watch it again.

Hung out with Simon E. Sat. night and on the way home ran into former NF and Tucows guy Phil R. at Spadina station.
Coincidentally, I’d fired off an e-mail to Phil (remember when Gmail was new in Beta, and you got invites? My first went to Phil, because he was fiending for one) asking which old John Woo movies were good because of a convo I’d had with Ming about how bad John Woo Hollywood movies were.
Phil recommended Hard Boilder and The Killer, which I picked up.
Gonna give one of them a watch tonight.

I forgot to mention that when I went to see The Mummy last night, I was the only person in the audience – seriously, I was the only person in there.
It was night, I got my pick of the seats (obviously) and didn’t have to worry abut someone taking my stuff when I went to the washroom.
The reason that was important is – I GOT YAKUZA 2 yesterday at WalMart! The reason I’m mentioning WalMart is because they’re selling the game for $30 CDN, as opposed to the $40 that everyone is trying to get for it. So for that I’ll give them a mention.
Verisign was kind enough to feed us for lunch, the burgers (professionally barbecued) were great, as were the noodle and green salads.
I didn’t get any time with Yakuza last night, hopefully I will sometime over the course of the weekend.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
I was surprised at how emotional I got in it during the tender scenes between Michelle Yeoh and the younger woman in the movie.
But that was just because I think Michelle Yeoh is cool and deserves better.
I liked the first Mummy movie (well, the remake) a lot, thought Mummy 2 was kinda stinky, but not terrible and The Scorpion King was horrid. This one was better than The Scorpion King, and maybe Mummy 2.
But the tenderness (and Yetis!) killed it for me.
Brandon Fraser still fits the role to a tee though.
Traitor
Good until near the end when it went into paint by numbers mode. Oh yeah, I love Don Cheadle, but he’d be better as a fully nasty character at least once.
The Dark Night
I liked this one a lot, the writing was really good. The weakest character in the whole thing was Batman, because he didn’t say much, Alfred got a really cool speech.
Oh, I already wrote a review of this I think, but I have to say it again, don’t bring Morgan Freeman back. Or if you do, please give him a flaw.

Star Trek: TNG was pretty cheesey, no? [caption id="attachment_336" align="alignnone" width="200" caption="Why Tom Baker as Dr. Who as Sherlock Holmes? I love Tom Baker"] [/caption]
Having seen The Dark Knight twice now (it’s a rarity for me to see the same movie twice, this one’s really good though so I happily indulged) it got me thinking about the nature of human conflict.
On the one hand, we have good versus evil, picking sides is easy in this one, we pick the good side – despite the fact many of us are more similar to the bad guy. We also have two men with (presumably) conflicts in their own hearts and minds. Whom do we side with when we take motivation into account? The one who doesn’t do evil, but that one also stands for the continuation of an establishment that’s been proven corrupt. He’s supporting a system that’s known to have deep faults. The one who is evil by every standard we can measure is like a plague that starts off killing the most diseased parts of society first, then works its way up to overthrow the established order completely. The bad guy is more successful at killing badness than the good guy is.
Anyhoo, I’m not really going anywhere with this, but it made me think of Sherlock Holmes vs. Professor Moriarty.
And I think it would be kind of cool to have my own Moriarty. Maybe not the unfathomably brainy type adversary (I don’t want to be overmatched now) but someone more than my intellectual equal who was trying to undermine me because of my shortcomings. That would be a fun challenge!
But then, hubrus is usually the end of such people and I certainly wouldn’t want that.

I still don’t understand what Cillian Murphy was doing there.
I just don’t get it.

Hooray for Rainbow Cinemas!
Horrible pre-show animations aside, you can’t beat Rainbow Cinemas for affordable movie going in this day and age. If it wasn’t for my spending about a million dollars (exaggerated slightly) on food this past weekend/Canada Day.
So….here are the movie reviews for my four most recent seen flicks:
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
This movie was very disappointing because it lacked all the thrills that made the original Indy films very enjoyable. This movie just went through the motions. I think Spielberg just threw up his hands and said, “Okay this one” when George Lucas went to him with the lame script. Terrible way to end a great series of movies
Kung-Fu Panda
This movie is a lot of fun, the story has been told a zillion times in different movies, and it isn’t always that much fun, but overall I’d say it’s entertaining and watchable again, which is high praise from me.
Wall-E
The streams have crossed! I’d never really liked a Dreamworks animated movie before (not Shrek, certainly not Ice Age, not Shark Tale, Antz) and I’d always enjoyed Pixar’s, but Kung-Fu Panda is superior to Wall-E in almost every way. Wall-E is just too cute all the time, it’s got a couple of good laughs but its humour just takes a backseat to the cute robots. It was a real disappointment.
Wanted
Stupid, stupid, stupid. I’d say it’s good popcorn entertainment, but enjoying it requires you to have not seen any action movies in the last 10 years.

I saw 88 Minutes with Raul last night.
Pacino was pretty good in it, the movie itself kind of sucked. The ending was ridiculous.
