‘Friends’

September 10, 2008 6:38 pm

If I ever had a ‘friend’ like this, well wouldn’t I be the biggest sap?

This culture isn’t just consumerist anymore, it’s just got some weird fascination with ‘lifestyle’ and ‘enjoying yourself’ that we’ve totally bought into the notion we have to go broke doing it. This story is about someone I never want to have as a friend (I didn’t read it, but the headline sounds bad.

And I don’t even want to be friends with people who’d be friends with someone like that, it’s like guilt by association, but taken to the Greg Burns judgmental extreme.

It’s like people who marry psychos…can’t you get a whiff of the weirdness when you first meet the person?

Oh yeah, btw, The Single Greatest Story I read all year.

Random Stuff

6:14 pm

Hahaha, today I had occasion to take (a not copious amounts of) notes and as I was going through my old notes I noticed all my spelling mistakes. Only, I hadn’t made spelling mistakes. I underlined words for emphasis, but in my computer-retrained mind I associated the underlines with spelling mistakes.

It took me a couple of seconds to clue in.

I don’t write things down anymore (either print by hand or cursive writing). I just don’t have occasion to. I don’t write letters; I write blog posts. I hardly ever e-mail anymore.

Things have changed, and I barely noticed during the process, but looking back there’s been a lot of significant changes. Sometimes I feel like ol’ Boinzy is in a state of flux, that all I have from one series of moments to the next is my memory, otherwise I’m a totally different person, removed from who I was before.

I wonder if that’s just temporary.

For the Guitarists

The Ultimate Guitar Chord Chart II
(don’t take my word for it, this comes directly from them).

Regarding Music in General
I’ve started singing when I’m alone, unaccompanied. I’m trying to train my voice a bit, so I’m a little less tone deaf. The funny thing is, I distinctly remember people telling me I sounded not-so-bad (for me, anyway) when I thought I was off. I’ll hook a mic up and start singing over my stuff relatively soon, just to see how I sound.

My intention is to start recording songs in the relatively near future. I mean, real songs, with vocals and all that. The purpose of my little jams is mainly to work on my production skills. I’m going to write songs myself, the drums will be a tough proposition, but I’ll just MIDI those, which will be time-consuming but in time I’ll get better at it.

Regarding my Sink
It’s fixed, the incessant drip I had going on for the last few months was repaired today, thankfully. It was starting to get on the floor of my apartment, so the timing’s good.

Regarding Yakuza 2
I’ve been hunting a copy of the game for the last couple of days; I’ll stop by the plaza (with its four stores that sell games) tomorrow to see if someone has it. It’s $10 less at a specific store, so I’m hoping they’ll have a copy. Not that I really have the time to play it.

Where’s Fealin?

Happy Day!!!!

Happy Day!!!

Kate C. has posted a comment on my blog.

And it would seem I owe her an apology, Kate, I see that you did create an account, and I can delete it if you want to post under that name (you’d have to create a new one though).

Yay!!!!

Just for that, here’s a new thingie, it’s me jamming in Dorian, somewhat more successfully than last night’s rush job.

Again, yay!!!

Oh yeah, here it is.

Awesomeness

September 1, 2008 7:02 pm

The Very (music link – it’s awesomeness) Talented Erin wrote a nice post to thank me for donating some space to her to post her music.

(BTW, Erin’s blog, WildArchaic is The.Greatest.Blog.Ever. IMHO)

I just figured, after polluting the Internet with my (ahem) music, I should give back and let someone with real talent put something up. And she didn’t disappoint. The piece ‘Old Souls’ is a great tune. Of course, I’d have put some sitar and a screechingly awful guitar solo in there, but the song on its own is great otherwise.

Hats off you to, Erin!

Reminder: if anyone wants some webspace just ask, I’ll hook you up with a nicespace.ca subdomain tout de suite!

Random People Spotting and Random Gregattacks

August 22, 2008 11:55 pm

Ran into ol’ D-Dawg tonight. I also ran into Julian H. at Indigo.

I went out for a walk through my neighbourhood (the very rock-on Sheppard and Yonge area [torontoconflict.com]).

So I ran into Darius today. I ran into him a couple of weeks ago at Empress Walk too, but I saw him tonight. He seems to be in great spirits.

I must digress though, is Toronto officially City 7 in Half-Life canon? I’d hate to think that someone decided that their ideas about Half-Life were worth a lick without Gabe’s say-so.

I like Gabe. Here’s some videos of Gabe. Gabe makes awesome games.

So Darius and I discussed the domains business and the hosting business. It was cool.

Random Gregattacks:

Left 4 Dead
is going to rock…I got a comment on my last blog post (check it out)…I bought a new domain name, http://www.freeshooters.com which I’m going to turn into a top-down shooters blog…JimmyJames called me a work hazard, which I guess is true…Goku and I will have our technology blog go live very soon…Count Chocula is delicious, even if it’s eaten dry…Mom’n dad are visiting next week…the Metro crew is coming over Sunday night (little do they know that a Singstar session is necessary)…

Happy Birthday! Congrats Geoff & Meg

Grumpy Guy and Super Mom welcomed a new baby to their family.

Congrats to all those involved!

I’ve seen pics, the little guy’s cute.

Greg rates another friend’s website

July 23, 2008 10:17 am

Owner: me
Domain: myweddingphotos.ca

http://www.myweddingphotos.ca is empty. I’ve donated it to two of my friends so they could put up their photos, but the only thing up is the default installation of Gallery (Gallery’s a great photo album script, by the way).

Domain name (myweddingphotos.ca): C-
Site: F-

Overall mark (not an average): F-

Greg’s Ace Website Reviews.

July 19, 2008 8:24 pm

I’m going to review my friends’ websites.

First up, my oldest friend (seriously, he’s like 80), Ming who introduced me to the CGYG fellowship, and did a lot to help me become more spiritual and get to know Christ by example. He and his wife, Andrea are here:

Their link

First the domain name, it’s a subdomain, which is okay if it’s a subdomain of something relevant. In this case it is, but still I think your own domain in this day and age is better. I’d give them a solid C grade, because it’s far better than having a subdomain at some social networking site, and not as good as their own domain.

So first thing you see when you visit there site is you get to a splash page of Ming and Andrea. That’s okay, it just tells you whom you’re looking at.

You get a bunch of options to choose from, some of which is pretty personal and probably only to be shared with their friends. Since no one reads this blog though I’ll link with impunity.

Now, I can see some problems here, first, they’ve named their pages with capitals to start the filenames. What’s up with that? Wedding.html, Aboutus.html. Bad, bad form. F- for that. I always name all my files with lowercase letters. It seems more ordered that way, and I think everyone should follow suit.

The content on the pages is fine though. Props for all the pictures and stuff.

If you go to the Dietician’s Corner page you can click on a link to a blog which is about food. That’s cool and all, but it’s using the default WordPress theme – BORING! and it made me hungry. Since I don’t have any food in the house, it gets an F- too. Even though there’s lots of great content, the site just has too many problems.

Overall Grade: F-

Next is John Gallo’s jgallo.ca

Hello.

All the site has on it is the word, “Hello”. Like John thinks that minimalism is cool or something. Whatever.

The scary thing is the guy has mad Internet skills, too. The lack of effort is shocking. The domain name is fine though.

Overall Grade: F-

Onto Sage Koh’s yellowheaven.com

yellowheaven.com.

yellowheaven.com

This is the single greatest domain name ever. It’s racial and blasphemous, but it’s still the single greatest domain name anyone’s ever come up with (I owned over 1,500 domains at my peak, and would have traded them all in for yellowheaven.com). A+ for the domain.

For the content, it’s fine, the dude’s a cyclist and he writes about cycling and bikes. He hasn’t updated since March, 2008 so that’s going to lose him a few marks, but otherwise, nice job, Sage.

I should also mention his new domain is mongoliantorque.com – which is pure awesomeness too (how do you do it, Sage?).

The WordPress theme doesn’t seem to fit the subject matter at all, C- for that.

Overall Grade: B+

I’ll find other victims to review later.

Random People spotting

July 18, 2008 8:08 am

Had a coffee with Joe C. last night.

Ran into Sharoni S. from high school (and elementary school!) at the Starbucks.

Time totally flies man, crazy :D

Another Random People Sighting

July 9, 2008 7:09 pm

This one was a happy coincidence happened about a week before Sagey Koh’s sighting, but I saw ol’ NF/Tucows buddy Mikey T. (link) on the patio of the local Shoeless Joe’s as I left the TCX building across the street.

Mikey’s off to bigger and better things, but he’s the guy who hooked me up at Tucows and a good friend.
