The subway into work today.

May 29, 2008 3:12 pm

On the subway into work today there was a woman who was holding her baby, with a stroller in front of her.

I assumed the stroller was for the baby and she was just holding her so the baby would relax. But when her stop came up, she got up holding the baby and pushing the stroller. In the stroller I saw an older child who was completely asleep.

Not wanting to wake the older child she tried pushing the stroller with the older child in it, all the while holding the younger in her arms. At that point a man who had just gotten on the train got up and helped her push the stroller onto the platform.

The guy returned to find his seat had just been taken by someone else and there wasn’t any room in the car for him to find another one.

Crashed on a friend’s couch.

3:08 pm

I crashed on a friend’s couch last night, I haven’t done that in a long time.

It’s funny, but being taken out of my comfort zone (my precious bed!, my bathroom!, my pyjamas!) once in a while I think is good for me.

I didn’t sleep very well because the living room was too bright and the sounds of the street outside too loud; but I had nice little thoughts while I was trying to nod off – which took a few hours.

If you don’t have something good to say.

I find myself more and more saying stupid things.

It’s not that I’m probably saying more stupid things, but I’m just noticing it more, which I suppose is a good sign. A sign that I’m becoming a little more thoughtful.

My parents are in town…

May 23, 2008 8:44 am

So my parents are in town, came in early Thursday and are probably leaving Friday afternoon.

So this morning I got up and my mom had made me lunch. I made sure not to forget it and brought it into the office with me. It was sitting on my desk this morning when Kyle came over to read something off my screen, saw the bagged lunch and said “Are your parents in town?”

:D

Tonight, la la la la la la tonight.

May 21, 2008 7:46 pm

Had dinner with an old friend, one of those friends that I’ve sadly ignored for a long time.

She’s doing great, having started a pretty cool job in the last while. We went out to China town and had a great meal.

I think China town food prices have gone up, I remember when Ming and Andrea and I went out to a restaurant there and the three of us ate for less than tonight’s bill.

Anyway, so after I helped my friend do some grocery shopping I went home.

THEN I NAPPED.

I hadn’t napped in a while it seems. But napping is great. I used to be a great napper, having napped a bit on most evenings and weekend days. Nowadays I get one contiguous (another word that I love using but I’m not sure what it means) sleep, but I don’t seem as well rested, and I’m less productive.

I think I’ll make the resolution to nap more.

Another thing, I want to write some arena rock tunes. I can’t emphasize that enough.

I want to write the kind of arena rock where the singer just shouts out city names to end the song. But I want to do that in the middle of the song. Maybe for the whole song. That’d be awesome.

John Rutsey passes on.

7:36 am

John Rutsey won’t be a name that most of you had heard of, but he was Rush’s first drummer.

He played on their first album, Rush and then quit because he couldn’t tour due to his diabetes (allegedly he became a bodybuilder after his rock’n roll days).

Anyway, John passed on from complications from the diabetes (I guess this is their website) and that’s where his parents want any donations to go.

My personal anecdote to share is this:

One Sunday morning at my parents’ house in Toronto when I was in high school I was listening to Rory O’Shae (I guess that’s how you spell it) on Q107. He asked the following trivia question:

“Name the original lineup of Rush.”

Now, for anyone who knows me, answering this was the easiest question in the world. I sauntered over to the phone, dialed in the number and the producer asked me if I knew the answer. I just said “John Rutsey” and then I was put on the air.

I got tickets (one I gave to James King) to see some horrible buddy-cop-with-a-dog movie that had Chuck Norris in it and passes to see some band play at the old Barracuda club in the city. As well as some other random trinkets.

Rest in Peace, John.

Okay, on my to-do list:

1) Show up early to learn my new duties with Alex and Adam
2) Finish writing the scripts for the stock options project James and I have going on
3) Clean up the apartment (mom’n dad are coming this weekend)
4) Pick up Wii Fit
5) Learn how to really use Cubase and all my VSTs
6) Meet that someone special
7) Get married

Ushering in a new era.

3:39 pm

I fulfilled my Kate-Wilson super wedding usher duties this past weekend.

It’s cool how many people there I knew, between the CGYG folks and the Metro Baptist Church people as well.

But as always, it was one person who’s name I didn’t know (and I sure should have known) that I felt bad about. Given my official status as Usher, I felt it was my duty to be informed and I wasn’t.

:(

The Smooth Prognosticator

3:30 pm

Gautam always posts some interesting tech industry related stuff on his blog, appropriate I guess because he labels himself a ‘Digital Media Futurist’.

This post: (link) and the article he links to are pretty good reads, the author, Matthew Yglesias makes some really interesting points.

Still, can’t help but wonder if all this, ‘Where’s tech going next?’ bloggery is just a way for people to escape their real lives.

I know it is for me.

88 Minutes that I want back.

3:16 pm

I saw 88 Minutes with Raul last night.

Pacino was pretty good in it, the movie itself kind of sucked. The ending was ridiculous.
