Black school in Toronto

The Toronto School Board agreed to charter a black only school.

I’m a guy who’s down with the end of funding for public education, and I’m black so I’m totally not down with there being a blacks-only school in Toronto. Stuff like that is totally not cool with me.

For one thing, I know this is said a lot, but being black is just a skin colour, culturally there’s a ton more diversity among black people from various parts of Africa or the Caribbean than non-black people would know. Lumping them into a school based on skin colour (because ‘racially’ there’s a lot of variation among us too) isn’t going to be a good thing.

I can totally understand that people want to see black kids do better, and segregation might be a way of achieving that, but it has to be the worst way imaginable.

It’s just such a horrid precedent it should be illegal or something. It’s both an embarrassment to blacks and discriminatory.

I see this as the start of something really, really bad.
